POTP FOR MAGGIE

Maggie went to the Vet today to get her nails done with Butch and the vet told him Maggie needed her shots also next week so he went ahead and had them done.  When I ran home for lunch he told me something was wrong with Maggie.  I could tell as soon as I saw her that she was in trouble.  Her body was swollen and I could see red/pink shining through her fur.  You could not even see her eyes very well, she looked like a little sharpai....I called the vet and told him I was running her over to the office.  They told me after seeing her that she must of had a reaction to them giving her all the shots.  I agree, geeze louise!!  Anyway they gave her a shot of predisone and two pills to take when i get home. I am glad Butch is home with them this afternoon.  I stayed at home with her for about an hour but so far no change.  She is trying to rest and relax but keeps getting up and turning around.  I am hoping she will be able to relax before long.  I know some of you have had this happen with your puppers....can you tell me how long it lasted etc.....
Thank you for keeping Mags in your prayers.
Deb

  8. Uh oh - those shots are bad enough, but to have a reaction like that is terrifying! Poor Maggie. I'm sure she feels yucky. I've heard other dogs get reactions like this and it does take awhile for them to feel better. How scary for *all* of you!

  11. Howdy Puggie Mates. Paws crossed here in Oz for sweet Maggie. Our angel brother Bruce had a terrible reaction to a bee sting and swelled up something awful but about 6-8 hrs after medication he started to come good. Take care mates. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  13. F & E's Mom here...

We had that happen once... with one of our angel Short Haired ones... We always ALWAYS take Benadryl to the vet's office when we go for our annual shots... and we DO NOT let them give more than TWO things during the visit... We go BACK the next week for any additional shots that are needed.
the Swelling should start coming down in a couple of hours... once SOMETHING is given for it... ex: the benedryl pills that we take along with us...
In the future you will probably have to have only One or no more than TWO vaccinations at a time with her. ONCE they have a reaction... they are WAY more likely to have it AGAIN.
We actually went ot the Vet TODAY and had only ONE thing Each... Next week we go back for the Second vaccination and then Frankie is due fur his rabies... so that will be a THIRD visit...
THEY don't like that we do it this way... but they are MY boys and I have to protect them... MY WAY. ONE shot at a time. THAT is My motto.
Just do NOT feel guilty about this... for MOST dogs there is NEVER EVER a problem.

  14. Oh no, we are so sorry and hope she is better. We have no experience with this (and hope to never have). Good thing it was caught fast!

  15. Max is very allergic to the Rabies vaccine. The last time he had it, he was so swollen that the vet has recommended NO MORE RABIES VACCINES for him and has written a letter to the county letting them know. Max was given injections of Benedryl and a similar anti-allergy medication and it took about 12 hours for him to completely return to normal again. He can't get the other vaccinations either (distemper, parvo, etc.) because the last one he got almost killed him. But the vet said since he's 10 years old, he has built up enough resistance to those diseases anyway. So no more shots of any kind for Max.

Maggie, we all have our paws crossed for you that you feel better real soon.
