STELLA ROSE

Yesterday Stella had another eye check up. She has been going almost every two weeks.  The vet has tried hard to find a ointment, or drops or anything that would stop the progression of the damage to Stella's left eye....but finally yesterday after she did the tear test and she was even worse after two weeks on her new medicine she decided we had hit a brick wall.  We started this whole eye drops etc. clear back when she was 6 months old.

So she gave me the name of two eye specialists here in Iowa and we discussed a strong possibility that she has severe glaucoma in her left eye, and it could progress over to her right eye.  She also told me that we as adults do not often notice the severe pain that glaucoma causes to their dog or cat.  We have been giving Stella a pain pill each morning, and I have noticed her rubbing her face more with her paws or on the floor etc.  I have also noticed she has a much lower tolerance for Maggie and her bulliness at times.

I have been suspecting this so it was not a big shock but it still broke my heart for her.  I know there are dogs out there who get along fine with one eye, and go about their lives.  I am hoping if it has to be that type of loss Stella will be one of them.  I think she will, she has always shown a brave heart.  I also hope they can stop it from developing worse in her right eye.

So I will let you know more as we find out.

  8. We will have all our paws crossed for StellaRose. Hopefully the specialist will be able to help. We hope it does not come to that but dogs can be amazingly resilient with the loss of an eye.

  10. She's certainly in our prayers that the eye doctors will figure out a less evasive fix. Should that not be the case I know that Stella will adjust and do just fine, whether with one eye or neither. I've seen too many dogs who do marvelously in either instance to doubt that. My Schnauzer buddy Huey was a prime example of adapting to having no sight and having a wonderful life! So hang in there and trust the docs and Stella Rose! Love, Gampy

  13. Mom says a vet told her once that the pain from glaucoma is very bad for a dog. She had a cockapoo who had very bad glaucoma first in one eye, then a year later in the other one. After many attempts to treat it with medication failed, Lucky had his eye removed and did just fine. Then the other eye had to come out, and still he did well as long as his environment stayed the same. When the family moved to KS, life got a lot harder for him. Has your vet done a pressure reading on Stella? That should confirm glaucoma. There are a few good eye specialists here in OP - not sure how far away you are. Lots of luck to Stella.

  15. Our Miss Ginger had a lot of eye problems and became totally blind by age 6 from cataracts and then glaucoma. It didn't slow her down a bit. She still ran full speed around the yard, led the way on walks, and was constantly underfoot during food preparation times. Good luck!

  18. Hi Deb! My cousin Mya had both her eyes removed because of glaucoma at 12 years old. She lived 2 years after that surgery... As you know, she just passed. Mom says it's very hard for the humans to come to terms with the decision of removal. She constantly had to remind herself of the time Mya had because she chose removal instead of euthanasia. We are praying really hard for all of you. <3, Noodle

  20. I agree to trust your veterinarian specialist!.
We also know dogs who have no eyes.
We did not realize rubbing the face on carpet and stuff was a symptom of eye problems.. Tweedles does that all the time..
Trust the eye specialist,, and we hope you take her soon,, so she can get better.

  24. I'm so sorry to hear this, Deb. I'm thankful that at least you have a diagnosis about what's going on and can go from there. You're right that many dogs can do fine with sight in only one eye. We will be praying for Stella - and for you!!!

  29. Sending you good pug juju, Stella! I know the eye specialist will be able to help you! I had to go to one once and they gave me this really powerful medicine (much better than the stuff from my regular vet) that worked wonders when I had an eye injury. Take care, little one!

    Sid.

  30. Having gone through terrible eye problems with one of my previous dogs, I know how you feel. I hope that the specialists can help with the pain and stop the progression. I was so impressed with the veterinary opthamologists who we saw with our dog. I hope that yours are just as good. Sending POTP.

  31. I feel so sad that none of the medicines worked for Stella. We will keep her in our prayers. Dogs just seem to adapt to there circumstances. I knew one blind and deaf dog and the owner trained it by tapping on the floor. The dog sense of the floor vibrations is how he learned to do and go with the owner most places.
    Thanks for being a friend
